In keeping with the theme of this election year, the National Watch and Clock Museum is currently presenting a special exhibit of presidential timepieces. The featured timepieces are as unique as the presidents who used them; and in many cases they represent the fine art of watch and clock making.
Highlights of the exhibit include George Washington's and John Adams' pocket watches, clocks belonging to James Polk and Franklin Roosevelt and wristwatches of Harry Truman and Lyndon Johnson. In all, twenty presidents are represented with over 30 objects on loan from a variety of presidential libraries, museums and historic sites.
This special exhibit is slated to run through 2008.
Located in York County, Pennsylvania, the National Watch and Clock Museum features a substantial collection of nineteenth-century American clocks and watches, plus an eclectic mixture of timepieces from around the world. Chronologically, the exhibits take you on a tour through the entire history of timekeeping technology; from early non-mechanical devices to today's atomic and radio controlled clocks.
Access is excellent throughout the museum, with plenty of accessible parking, a level entry and barrier-free access to all exhibit areas. For more information about the National Watch and Clock Museum, visit www.nawcc.org.
York County is also known as the factory tour capital of America, with a good number of the tours offering good wheelchair access. For detailed information about the most accessible factory tours, along with other York county sites, read the Summer 2008 issue of Emerging Horizons.
